Arwa El Masri is a child of many countries. She was born in Saudi Arabia, lived in America for a time, and yet, as the daughter of Palestinian migrants, Arwa did not have a country that she could call home. Her parents came to Australia to give all their daughters the greatest gift they could, somewhere they could belong.
It took a teenage Arwa time to find her way in her new country and to reconcile her Muslim faith with her life as a young woman in western Sydney. But slowly Australia got under her skin . . . and into her heart. She lost her accent and stopped being startled when kookaburras laughed. She met her future husband, Hazem El Masri, in the most unlikely way. But he was not who she thought she should marry. Getting to know him made Arwa look at her own prejudice, reassess what was important to her and how she wanted to live her life. Her grandmother’s wisdom helped guide her.
When she was twenty-three and newly married, this Aussie girl who loved John Farnham and Vegemite decided it was time for her to wear the veil. The first time she went out in public with it on she was shocked. Many assumed she did not speak English or that her husband had told her what to wear. Both were incorrect.
Through telling her story, Arwa shows the importance of belonging for everyone and how alike we all are. Regardless of faith, we are all looking for the same things safety, love, and a sense of home . . .

This was a definite teaser into her life. I wanted more stories about her religion.I loved how she gave recipes of the food she shares. I have made some of them to share too.

The memoir instantly appealed to me as I was curious to learn more about a Muslim woman's experience of living in Australia and to understand more about her culture and how she managed to integrate the two. I learnt so much from this book. I think the thing that stood out the most to me, and of which I had some understanding of to a small extent previously, but which is one of my main lessons I have taken away - is that the extremism seen amongst some Muslim countries and terrorism is as a result of distortions of Islam and governments for their own political aims rather than as a result of the religion. I had always thought it strange to blame a whole religion for terrorism as I had often heard expressed, but I had equally equated blaming all Christians for wars started by Christian countries or views of extremist Christian groups as NOT representing Christianity as a whole. Reading Arwa's memoir reinforced this view for me.
I also initially thought, that as I am non-religious I would lose interest in the memoir as the author strongly intertwines her belief in Islam throughout her story. However, the opposite occurred and I was intrigued, fascinated and found it hard to put down. I certainly did not feel preached to, and also did not feel as though the author was trying to convert me, but rather the historical context and the way her belief intertwines into all aspects of her life, including her cooking, fascinated and intrigued me.
Themes of identity, the search for meaning, belonging or not belonging, integration, religion and faith, family and culture - are all beautifully addressed as she describes growing up in both Australia and Saudi Arabia and are included in the journey of discovering who she was, including understanding her family of origin, and their roots and life stories. These are all themes unique to the universal human experience and will appeal to many who are interested in what makes us who we are, and why we may believe as we do.
I LOVED the recipes. I am absolutely going to cook some of them. My mouth was watering reading them. I loved the way she included some in nearly all chapters and the story behind why and her memories of eating the food and cooking the recipes were an added bonus.
I think this memoir is so important particularly in Australia at the present time with governmental policy so strongly against boat people and refugees in general. The contribution that immigrants have made to building Australia, as also outlined in the memoir, is lost in the current rhetoric, and the demonising of immigrants as portrayed in popular media, needs to be counter balanced. The fact that the author married a popular player from the Canterbury Bulldogs and hardly knew who he was when she first met him, adds a really interesting touch to the book. Her combining a bit of both their stories will appeal to many people.
Loved all aspects of this story. It shows how life can be so tough for people around the world. Wanting to free and live in a great country, we are so lucky to live in the Lucky Country.
I absolutely loved this book. Arwa is a gorgeous human being and one I would love to meet.
The story is a wonderful one, with lovely recipes through it. A must read..
